Indian Railways is the largest employment sector for youth, offering job opportunities for everyone from 10th-grade passouts to graduates. Let's explore the complete recruitment criteria...
Getting a job in the Indian Railways is the dream of millions of youth. It is the country's largest government sector, with thousands of vacancies being filled each year. There are certain criteria for securing a job in the Railways, which are crucial to understand.
Most importantly, there are opportunities for everyone from 10th-grade passouts to engineering graduates. The Railways not only offers a stable career but is also a preferred choice for youth due to its government benefits and security.
The Railways recruits for various Group A, B, C, and D positions. Regarding educational qualifications, for Group D positions such as trackman, gangman, or helper, a candidate must have passed 10th grade from a recognized board. For some positions, an ITI certificate may also be required.
Candidates with 12th or graduation can apply for positions like clerk, station master, or assistant. A diploma or BE/BTech is required for technical positions. Recruitment for Group A and B (officer-level positions) is done through UPSC or Railway Board exams.
Regarding the age limit, the minimum age is 18 years and the maximum is 33 years. However, SC/ST candidates are given a 5-year relaxation, and OBC candidates are given a 3-year relaxation. Women and disabled candidates also receive additional relaxation for certain positions.
The Railway recruitment process is conducted through the RRB (Railway Recruitment Board) and RRC (Railway Recruitment Cell). The selection process is completed in four stages. The first is an online exam, or CBT, which includes questions from mathematics, general knowledge, reasoning, and English. This is followed by a Physical Efficiency Test (PET), which tests running and physical endurance. Those who pass the exam are subjected to document verification and a medical test.
The most impressive aspect of a railway job is its salary and benefits. Group D employees earn approximately ₹18,000 to ₹25,000, while clerk or assistant positions offer salaries ranging from ₹25,000 to ₹35,000. Positions such as station master or junior engineer offer salaries ranging from ₹40,000 to ₹60,000. Railway employees also receive numerous benefits, including free travel passes, medical facilities, government housing, pensions, and bonuses.
