Bihar Election 2025: While the issue of inflation was at the center of political debate during the election season, a November morning brought good news for consumers. Oil companies have reduced the prices of commercial LPG cylinders, providing relief to small businesses and hotel and restaurant owners.
Bihar Election 2025: Amid the Bihar Assembly elections, good news has arrived for those struggling with inflation. Oil companies have reduced the prices of commercial LPG cylinders effective November 1st. Rates have decreased by ₹5 to ₹6.5 from Delhi to Patna. There has been no change in the price of domestic cooking gas (14.2 kg cylinders).
A 'small relief' from inflation in the Bihar election environment
Amidst election rallies and promises, rising kitchen expenses have been a major concern for the average consumer. The beginning of November has brought some relief. Oil companies have reduced the price of a 19-kg commercial cylinder, directly benefiting hotels, restaurants, and small business consumers.
In Delhi, this cylinder is now available for ₹1590.50, up from ₹1595.50 previously. In Mumbai, the price has been reduced to ₹1542, in Chennai to ₹1750, and in Kolkata to ₹1694. This means consumers have received relief of ₹5 to ₹6.50.
Commercial cylinders are cheaper by up to ₹6
According to the rates released on the first day of November, the price of a 19-kg commercial cylinder in Delhi has now become ₹1590.50, up from ₹1595.50 previously. In Kolkata, it has dropped from ₹1700.50 to ₹1694, in Mumbai from ₹1547 to ₹1542, and in Chennai from ₹1754.50 to ₹1750.
Traders and restaurant owners have received an average reduction of ₹5 to ₹6.50 per cylinder. This is the third consecutive month that commercial cylinder prices have declined. Oil marketing companies say that the decline in the average price of LPG in the international market has also impacted the domestic market.
In the past year, commercial cylinder prices have decreased by approximately ₹200. While the price in Delhi was ₹1802 on November 1, 2024, it has now dropped to ₹1590.50.
A decrease of up to ₹200 since last year
This is not the first time commercial cylinder prices have decreased. There has been a consistent decline over the past year. On November 1, 2024, a 19-kg cylinder in Delhi cost ₹1802, which has now come down to ₹1590.50, a relief of approximately ₹210 in a year.
This relief has been made possible by the stability of LPG prices in the global market and the decline in the dollar rate. The international market remains volatile, which makes further changes possible in the coming months.
Domestic Cylinder Prices Remain Unchanged
There has been no change in the price of domestic cooking gas at present. The rates for a 14.2-kg LPG cylinder are ₹853 in Delhi, ₹852.50 in Mumbai, ₹890.50 in Lucknow, ₹951 in Patna, ₹985.50 in Kargil, and ₹969 in Pulwama. Consumers in Patna, the capital of Bihar, are paying much higher prices than in Delhi and Mumbai.
LPG rates vary from city to city. This is due to several economic and geographical reasons. Each state has a different VAT (Value Added Tax) rate, and many states also impose additional taxes on LPG. Furthermore, transporting cylinders to areas far from refineries or gas depots is more expensive. This transportation cost increases in hilly and rural areas, leading to higher prices. Dealer margins, storage costs, and the quality of the distribution system also play a significant role in determining prices.
Inflation vs. Relief – What Are the People Thinking?
While Bihar is awash with election promises, the general public is grappling with daily inflation. This reduction in LPG cylinder prices, while slight, is providing psychological relief to consumers.
According to data from the Petroleum Ministry, Bihar has approximately 13.5 million LPG consumers, of which 11.2 million are beneficiaries of the Ujjwala Yojana. Consequently, every price change has a direct impact on the rural economy.
