In a major digital push, the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) is set to revolutionize the Aadhaar update process with the introduction of a QR code-based e-Aadhaar verification system. This upgrade will eliminate the need to carry or submit physical photocopies of Aadhaar for identity verification, aiming to simplify processes, reduce fraud, and enhance privacy across services.
What’s Changing? QR Code to Replace PhotocopiesBy the end of 2025, UIDAI plans to fully roll out a QR code-enabled e-Aadhaar system across India. This means that Aadhaar holders will no longer need to provide hard copies of their Aadhaar card for identification purposes. Instead, the secure QR code can be scanned to instantly verify identity—saving time, reducing document misuse, and ensuring data remains secure.
According to UIDAI CEO Bhuvnesh Kumar, about 2,000 machines out of the 1 lakh in use have already been upgraded to support this new system.
Aadhaar Updates to Become Easier Starting NovemberFrom November 2025, Aadhaar holders will only need to visit Aadhaar enrolment centers for biometric verification—such as fingerprint and iris scans. For all other personal information updates like name, date of birth, gender, or address, users will be able to submit requests online from home using the updated Aadhaar app.
This transition will significantly reduce paperwork and streamline the overall process, especially for those in remote areas or those who previously faced challenges with Aadhaar updates due to documentation issues.
Direct Integration with Government DatabasesOne of the key features of this upgrade is UIDAI’s decision to directly source user information from verified government databases. The Aadhaar system will now draw personal details from:
-
Birth certificates
-
Driving licences
-
Passports
-
PAN cards
-
MNREGA records
-
Ration cards (PDS)
There are also ongoing discussions to integrate electricity bill records for easier and faster address verification.
This centralized approach will help in automatically validating submitted information, making the update process more reliable and error-free.
Special Focus on Biometric Updates for ChildrenUIDAI is also working to streamline biometric updates for children, which are mandatory between the ages of 5–7 years and again between 15–17 years.
To facilitate this, UIDAI is planning to conduct enrolment drives in collaboration with education boards like CBSE. These initiatives will make it easier for school-going children to comply with biometric requirements without needing separate visits to enrolment centers.
Enhanced Security and Privacy with QR Code VerificationThe QR code-based e-Aadhaar verification system is being designed with a strong emphasis on privacy and data protection. The system ensures that personal details will only be accessible with the user’s consent, preventing unauthorized access.
Currently, UIDAI is piloting this new QR code feature in sub-registrar offices and hotels, where secure and instant identity verification is crucial. This is also expected to curb the use of fake documents in sensitive transactions like property registrations and hotel check-ins.
