A recent study by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and Tata Memorial Centre has revealed the growing burden of cancer in the country and its worrying pattern. This study has revealed the most common cancers in women and men in India.
Let us know what the most common cancers are in women and men (Common Cancer in Indian Women) and what other things have come to light in this study.

What does the study say?
This study has revealed that breast and cervical cancers are most common in Indian women, while lung and oral cancer cases are the most common in men. This data draws attention to the changing nature of cancer in India and why it is important to focus on cancer prevention and treatment.
This study, published on August 20, analyzed more than 7 lakh cases and more than 2 lakh cancer-related deaths registered in 43 cancer registries in the country. According to the report, an estimated 15.6 lakh new cancer cases will be reported in India in the year 2024, which is more than about 14.9 lakh cases in 2023. This ever-increasing number points to a serious health challenge.
Different types of cancer in women and men
The biggest finding of the report is that the number of cancer cases differs based on gender.
In women, breast cancer is the most common, followed by cervical cancer. Cervical cancer remains a major challenge, especially in rural areas.
In men, oral cancer and lung cancer are most commonly found.
The picture of the whole country is not the same.
This study also shows that cancer figures vary in different states and regions of the country.
Northeast India - Cases of esophageal and stomach cancer are more common in this region.
Urban areas - The number of breast and oral cancer cases is higher in metros like Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and Delhi.
Rural areas - Cancers like cervical cancer are more prevalent in rural India.
What is the way forward?
This ICMR report clearly states that to fight cancer, it is important to focus on the prevention of different cancers and their risk factors. On one hand, while different cancers are prevalent in different parts of the country, there is also a need to focus on targeted prevention.
Symptoms of cervical cancer, Symptoms of breast cancer

What do experts say?
Dr Mandeep Singh Malhotra (Director of Surgical Oncology, CK Birla Hospital, Delhi) explains that the ICMR report highlights a grim reality. Breast and cervical cancer are the leading cancer burdens among Indian women.
It is important to remember that about 80% of cervical cancers are preventable with HPV vaccination and regular screening, while breast cancer can be detected in the early stages with regular self-examination and mammography. With timely intervention, both cancers can be treated effectively. Awareness, access to the right healthcare and affordable screening can go a long way in reducing the burden of these cancers in India.
