Netflix chose to divide season two of Wednesday in half, with the initial four episodes released together on Wednesday, August 6.

The latter half, consisting of episodes five to eight, arrives on Wednesday, September 3.

Speaking about the release pattern, Wednesday's co-creator Alfred Gough revealed to Forbes that the choice was "something that came from Netflix."

Nevertheless, it allowed both Gough and fellow co-creator Miles Millar to structure the storyline differently and leave fans hanging on a massive cliffhanger. Gough revealed that this fresh format allowed them to "change up the storytelling mystery" and for the first half of the season to "feel complete" in itself, rather than making audiences wait until the final eighth episode.

This release schedule is a stark contrast to the first series, when Netflix released the entire first season of Wednesday all at once.

Other programmes that have seen their seasons divided include Bridgerton's third season and Cobra Kai's sixth season, with the latter being split into three parts.

The upcoming fifth and final season of Stranger Things will also be extended over three parts spanning a few months.

Netflix has been progressively dividing the release of its major shows to sustain interest and crucially, keep subscribers on its platform.

This decision comes amidst an increasingly congested streaming market, with numerous video-on-demand platforms vying for space and subscribers.

When Netflix initially launched with its first-ever Original series House of Cards, the platform would release entire shows as a boxset for fans to binge-watch.

Seeing Netflix's success, other platforms including Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV+, Paramount+, Disney+, and many others subsequently launched.

However, the significant difference is, many of these platforms, particularly Apple TV+, release episodes on a weekly basis to maintain their subscription base.

Netflix is likely to persist with this trend of releasing shows in parts moving forward as they strive to retain their share of the streaming market.
