As the sacred month of Sawan draws to a close, Hariyali Teej—one of its most significant festivals—will be celebrated on 27th July 2025. Dedicated to the long life and prosperity of husbands, married women observe a strict nirjala (waterless) fast on this day, accompanied by puja and traditional rituals. But while spiritual discipline is key, so is taking care of your health.
If you're fasting this Hariyali Teej, make sure to avoid these common food and lifestyle mistakes to prevent fatigue, acidity, and weakness:
1. Avoid Tea or Coffee on an Empty StomachDrinking tea or coffee before eating anything can increase acidity and discomfort. Many women consume it to avoid headaches or to feel active, but it can backfire. Always have a light snack like fruits or soaked nuts before consuming caffeine.
2. Don’t Overeat the Day BeforeA common myth is that eating heavily before a fast helps sustain energy. In reality, it can slow digestion, making you feel lethargic and bloated the next day. Stick to light, sattvik meals like khichdi, dal-rice, or boiled veggies.
3. Avoid Fried and Spicy Food When Breaking the FastAfter a waterless fast, the digestive system is sensitive. Jumping straight to deep-fried snacks or spicy curries can lead to stomach issues and acidity. Instead, start with lukewarm water, followed by fruits or a light meal like khichdi or curd rice.
4. Don't Overindulge in SweetsWhile Hariyali Teej is incomplete without traditional sweets like Ghevar, Malpua, or Rasgulla, moderation is key—especially for those with blood sugar issues. Overeating sweets post-fast can spike sugar levels and cause fatigue.
5. Give Your Body the Rest It NeedsMany women stay busy with housework and puja preparations even while fasting. But a nirjala fast can take a toll on your energy. Take short breaks, sit or lie down when needed, and avoid excessive physical exertion.
