Bhubaneswar: The Deep Depression over northwest and adjoining westcentral Bay of Bengal crossed Odisha coast close to Gopalpur at around 5 pm on Thursday with maximum sustained wind speed of 55-65 kmph gusting to 75 kmph.
According to the India Meteorological Department, the system is likely to continue to move north-northwestwards across South Odisha and weaken gradually into a depression by October 3 morning.
Accumulated rainfall recorded in the last 24 hours, ending 5.30 pm, is as follows: Parlekhemundi (Gajapati) 101 mm, Koraput (Koraput) 63.6 mm, Daringbadi (Kandhamal) 46.0 mm, Nabarangpur (Nabarangpur) 42.2 mm.
The national forecaster had warned of heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning and gusty wind speed 30-40 kmph gusting to 50 kmph at many places in Balangir and Nuapada till 8.40 pm.
A red warning has been issued for the districts of Puri, Gajapati, Rayagada, Koraput, Ganjam, Kalahandi, and Kandhamal. Scattered heavy to very heavy rainfall with isolated extremely heavy falls and thunderstorm with lightning and gusty surface wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph gusting to 60 kmph may occur in these districts till Friday morning.
Similarly, heavy to very heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorm/lightning and gusty surface wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph gusting to 60 kmph may occur in Jagatsinghpur, Khurda, Cuttack, Nayagarh, Dhenkanal, Malkangiri, Nabarangpur, Balangir, Sonepur, Boudh, Balasore, Mayurbhanj, Bhadrak, Angul, Jajpur, and Kendrapada.
There is also a yellow warning of heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorm/lightning and gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph for Keonjhar, Sundargarh, Deogarh, Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Bargarh, and Nuapada districts.
It further stated that squally wind speed reaching 55-65 gusting to 75 kmph may prevail over westcentral & adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal and along and off Andhra Pradesh- Odisha- West Bengal coasts till midnight. Winds would gradually decrease thereafter becoming 40-50 gusting to 60 kmph by October 3 morning and decrease further thereafter.
On October 3, heavy to very heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorm/lightning and gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph may continue in Sundargarh district.
Isolated heavy rainfall along with thunderstorm/lightning and gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph is also likely in Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Jharsuguda and Bargarh. Thunderstorm/lightning and gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph may also occur in Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati,Sonepur, Boudh, Nuapada, Balangir, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Nabarangpur, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Angul and Dhenkanal, it added.
