Apples are handy for the Autumn period, with an increased demand for sweet desserts such as the British staple Apple crumble. So how can we make them stay fresher for longer? The answer is in their storage. If you prefer fruit in the refrigerator or on display in a decorative fruit bowl, the key is understanding the right method to protect its quality. One expert shares advice on the best storage methods that keep apples juicy.
"Apples should be stored in a cool, dry, and shaded place," reports American Head Distiller, Ken Wortz, working for a New York company which specialises in creating a signature vodka from its state's apples. However, they state that there are variables. "The best place to store apples is going to depend on your own environmental conditions (such as how warm or humid it is in your home)," adds Laura Scheck, chef and Founder of Teaching Table.
Whilst both the table and fridge are safe locations for the fruit, Martha Stewart's page asks the question of "how long you want them fresh," as the location then depends on the answer. The site states:
For long-term storage needs, experts Wortz and Scheck state that a crisper drawer within your fridge is a perfect place to ensure this. Wortz said: "They can last six to eight weeks stored in a refrigerator". They added that, for short-term uses, opt for the countertop as apples can last between one to two weeks there.
The experts add a further tip: In either location, fresh apples must be separated from other fruits. "Apples release the gaseous hormone ethylene, which will cause other fruits and vegetables to ripen faster, especially if the apples themselves are bruised or overripe," adds Scheck.
To avoid early ripening, Schenck instructs buyers to place the apples in a plastic tub or bag within the fridge, preferably in their own produce drawer, a separate fruit bowl, or even a paper bag on the countertop. The chef adds that, once the fruit has been cut, to avoid browning and bruising, place the slices back in the fridge as soon as possible. She concludes, saying: "Wrap them tightly in plastic or beeswax wrap and consume within a few days," adding that squeezing lemon juice on the pieces can prevent discolouration.
