Liberal Democrat leader Sir Ed Davey has been condemned for "pathetic gesture politics" after he announced he will snub His Majesty the King for one specific reason. In an announcement this evening, the centrist politician confirmed he would be boycotting the coming state banquet hosted by the King next month.
Politicians will gather and enjoy the King's hospitality as he welcomes Donald Trump to the UK for a crucial second state visit. Sir Ed argued that after a lengthy period of reflection, and even praying, he will reject the invitation on behalf of Gaza. The LibDem leader said: "Emily [his wife] and I have spent all summer thinking about this and have prayed about it. There is no honour like an invitation from the King, and not to accept his invitation goes against all of our instincts.

"But I fear we could have a situation where Donald Trump comes to our country, is honoured with a lavish dinner at one of our finest palaces, yet no one reminds him that he has the power to stop the horrifying starvation and death in Gaza and get the hostages released.
"If Donald Trump tells Benjamin Netanyahu to stop this, it ends tomorrow. If Donald Trump uses his influence over Qatar and other Gulf states that Hamas relies on, all the hostages could come home tomorrow.
"Boycotting the banquet is the one way I can send a message to Donald Trump and Keir Starmer that they can't close their eyes and wish this away. We have to speak up, they have to act. Donald Trump has to end this humanitarian crisis."
Sir Ed has long postured about Donald Trump, including at most sessions of PMQs, despite the special relationship being crucial for British jobs and livelihoods.
The LibDem leader has now been condemned by the Conservatives, who branded his decision "appalling".
Shadow Foreign Secretary Priti Patel said: "This an act of deep disrespect to His Majesty the King. It shows appalling judgment.
"America is our closest ally and security partner, and the world's biggest economy.
"Ed Davey has once again proved he is not a serious leader and more interested in pathetic gesture politics."
President Trump will be hosted by the King and Queen at Windsor Castle from September 17 to 19.
The invitation was extended by Sir Keir Starmer in an attempt to butter up the President amid Britain's desires to secure a trade deal with the US.
