Autumn is an excellent time to do lawn care as the ground is still warm from summertime, dampness returns with the shortening days and seasonal rains will keep the ground moist.
If the lawn is looking tired and patchy after a long summertime and needs to be brought back to life, then scarification, aeration and over-seeding will do the trick. All we need is a spring-tine rake, garden fork and bag of quality grass seed. The spring-tine rake is used to rake up the thatch, the garden fork for creating six-inch-deep aeration holes in the ground and grass seed to sow across the lawn.
To finish the job, we should quilt the seed with a lawn dressing or topsoil if you also want to level the lawn up.
The grass seed will need to be watered regularly if the days are dry, however if the rain is frequent then that should suffice. Once you have germination let the grass grow to about 5cm before considering cutting on the highest setting.
According to some gardeners, overseeding is another important task to do in September, as it helps avoid weeds and thickens up most areas of the lawn.
