Grigor Dimitrov retired in tears at Wimbledon while leading world No. 1 Jannik Sinner by two sets to love. The No. 19 seed grabbed his pectoral muscle while serving in the fourth game of the third set and dropped to the ground in pain. Sinner and the physio rushed over, and Dimitrov left the court to attempt to have treatment but returned moments later to throw in the towel.

This is the fifth Grand Slam tournament in a row in which Dimitrov has been forced to retire injured mid-match. Express Sport takes a look at the 34-year-old's recent physical injuries after his latest heartbreaking setback.

Wimbledon 2025

Dimitrov was on course to cause a huge upset over Sinner on Centre Court. He was serving at 40-15 1-2 in the third set and suddenly grabbed his pec after serving. It was recorded as an ace and he won the game, but he'd already dropped to the floor in pain. The Bulgarian soon retired but he will not complete any media commitments at Wimbledon on Monday night so he has not given an update on the issue.

The 34-year-old had pulled out of Queen's leading up to Wimbledon but, after his third-round win on Saturday, confirmed he was finally fit. "At the moment I feel great. I'm pain-free. I've done quite a sufficient amount of work before the tournament began," he said.

Dimitrov was also in the lead when he retired two sets to one up on qualifier Ethan Quinn at Roland Garros just a few weeks ago. The former world No. 3 had treatment on his left thigh during the second set and struggled to move in the third, retiring at 6-2 6-3 2-6.

Australian Open 2025

The current world No. 21 had to stop playing while facing lucky loser Francesco Passaro in round one. Dimitrov had pulled out of the recent Brisbane International with an adductor issue and it came back to haunt him at the end of the first set. He had an off-court medical time-out and attempted to play on but retired trailing 5-7 1-2.

US Open 2024

The Bulgarian found himself back in the quarter-finals of the US Open for the second time in his career, and the first time since 2019. But he retired more than three hours into the match with Frances Tiafoe up 6-3 6-7(5) 6-3 4-1. Dimitrov left the court with the physio at the end of the third set and appeared to be struggling with a leg issue.

He later said: "I think it's a combination of everything. Clearly my rehab process is a little bit slower than before. I mean, I felt a couple of things prior to the match. It's the game. It's just the game, and I need to keep my head up."

Wimbledon 2024

Dimitrov retired at the same stage here last year. The Bulgarian lasted just eight games against Daniil Medvedev. Dimitrov slipped on the court at 2-3 and had a medical time out for a knee issue, he continued playing but called it quits while 3-5 down.
