Lewis Hamilton and Martin Brundle in awkward moment at British GP - 'That's not true'

Sky Sports F1 pundit Martin Brundle was forced to defend himself after Lewis Hamilton was taken aback by a compliment at the British Grand Prix. The seven-time world champion is hoping to claim back-to-back race wins at Silverstone after crossing the chequered line first a year ago for Mercedes.

He is yet to stand on top of the podium while in Ferrari red, however, and is desperate to turn his fortunes around in front of a home crowd this weekend. The 40-year-old sat out of Thursday's press conferences but was a big part of media day and spoke to Brundle while on the track in front of fans.

Live on Sky, Brundle described a picture of Hamilton in a black coat as "one of the most iconic photographs ever in Formula One."

Hamilton, with a wry smile, replied: "Thanks man. It means a lot coming from you. You don't have many positive things to always say."

The pair then awkwardly spoke over one another as Brundle claimed: "Well that's not true."

At Silverstone 12 months ago, Hamilton claimed his first F1 win for two-and-a-half years as he extended his record number of victories at the circuit.

This time he is trying to end another run - 13 races without a podium finish.

He has finished on the British GP podium on the last 12 occasions, but Hamilton thinks that a wet track is the only chance he has of finishing ahead of Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri.

"I'm hopeful we will be in a similar position to Austria but I have never focused too much on Ferrari's performance here in the past," Hamilton said after an encouraging performance at the Red Bull Ring last time out.

"If it's a dry day, McLaren will walk off into the distance. But you never know what will happen here with the wind and rain.

"The crowd will make a big difference, so I'm hoping they help us get a bit closer."

Friday's practice sessions are expected to be dry, but forecasts suggest a small shower of rain on Saturday morning, which could impact qualifying.

For the Grand Prix, there is a 60 per cent chance of rain and a constant westerly wind.

Asked if he was dreaming of a potential 10th victory in front of home support, Hamilton added: "I really don't know and I would never want to jinx it. In my heart I'm hoping for a strong weekend.

"I've not had a podium yet so this would be a special place to have that. I'm hoping the amazing support we have here can make a difference."
