Peace lilies will never have brown, yellow or droopy leaves if you do 1 simple task

Peace lilies are typically low-maintenance houseplants, but they might require additional attention during autumn as their foliage could begin to droop or develop brown or yellow patches. If you notice that the leaves are starting to yellow, brown or wilt, it's most likely due to how you're watering your peace lily.

One major reason peace lilies get damaged leaves is due to overwatering, and during autumn, owners are more inclined to continue watering their plants as they did in the summer when temperatures were warmer. Despite originating from the rainforest, this houseplant actually doesn't need too much water; in fact, it prefers too little to too much, according to the gardening experts at The Little Botanical.

They claimed: "An overwatered plant will develop yellow, brown, droopy, rather sad-looking leaves, so it's best to avoid this if you can. The good news is, when you know how to check if your peace lily is ready for a drink, you can easily avoid an overwatered plant."

It's important to allow the top inch or so of the soil to dry out before watering again.

It's advisable to water peace lilies from the bottom by placing the pot in a saucer of water and allowing the plant to soak up the moisture.

Drain off any excess water after about 15 to 20 minutes to prevent waterlogged conditions.

When peace lilies are watered correctly, their soil should feel lightly moist to the touch but not extremely damp, as this could harm the roots.

Peace lilies are also sensitive to the chemicals in tap water, so "filtered water is best for them". Essentially, tap water contains magnesium and calcium, and these excess minerals can be harmful to them, or at least leave behind a white residue on the leaves

Alternatively, tap water can be left to sit for a couple of days, which allows these harmful chemicals to dissipate.

Houseplant owners could also boil water and leave it to cool or let tap water "dissipate" harsh minerals for at least 24 hours in a watering can.

Another thing to check in autumn is to be careful where you place peace lilies, as they are sensitive to the cold and should not be placed near a drafty window.

Since peace lilies love humidity so much, it is also important not to keep them near a radiator, as it can dry them out.

The best place to keep a peace lily is near a window, but not directly in it, so it gets enough sunlight to bloom.
