Getting makeup on your clothes can be incredibly frustrating, but it is easily done. Whether you're pulling a dress or shirt over your head and some of your foundation transfers across, or you're applying makeup and some drips onto your clothing, we've all been there at some point. Your first response might be to rub at the stain or throw the item right into the wash, but you could be making the mark even harder to get out.
Fortunately, one dry cleaning expert has revealed the best way to get makeup out of your items of clothing, and he praises one specific item: micellar water. Zach Pozniak, who is known to his 787,000 TikTok followers as Clean Freakz, revealed his tricks of the trade - and they could change the way you wash your clothes.
If you get foundation on your clothing, the first thing you should do is place a towel behind the affected area, he explains. Next, pour on micellar water - commonly used to remove makeup from skin - and gently rub it into the stain. At this point you can chuck the clothing item into the wash, and if the stain persists, repeat the steps and use oxygen bleach.
What about mascara? Zach recommends blotting the stain to start with using rubbing alcohol. After, apply all-purpose stain removing spray and place the item in the washing machine. Again, if the stain is still there, you can use oxygen bleach.
Lipstick stains might not be as common as foundation marks, but they can still be a real pain to get out of clothing. Zach suggests placing a towel behind the stain and rubbing on a small amount of liquid detergent with a spoon to transfer the stain. Once again, wash the item in the laundry as usual, and if the stain remains, give oxygen bleach a go.
Another common stain on clothing is coffee, which can be particularly difficult to get out of white items of clothing. If the coffee you spill is black, you should apply white vinegar to the area, because both liquids are acidic. Zach says: "In the cleaning world, like removes like."
You should then wash your garment as usual. However, if your coffee has milk and sugar in it, this requires surfactants and enzymes. Using a liquid detergent or an enzymatic stain remover, pretreat the item of clothing before washing. However, if it has already been washed and the stain is still there, apply hydrogen peroxide and let it air dry in the shade, Zach explains.
