A town has been placed at opposite ends of the spectrum, being named Britain's worst place to live while simultaneously one of the best. Aylesbury, the county town of Buckinghamshire, took the top spot of iLiveHere's annual 'worst' list and was included in The Guardian's list of the UK's happiest towns.
iLiveHere polled 110,000 people to find the worst places to live in the country. One local wrote: "If you're a middle to upper-class family or individual looking to move to Aylesbury, then ensure you employ four full-time security guards and a dog and some barbed wirearound your house." Another said: "As you enter into Aylesbury, you find yourself in a traffic jam. Don't worry, it's all part of the tour. Being stuck in the traffic allows you to observe the magnificent beauty of all the 'trashy citizens' that live there." It knocked Peterborough from the top spot, which it has held for the last three years, and the city is now in fifth place, behind Huddersfield, Luton, and Liverpool.
But clearly not all share the view, as the town was also on The Guardian's list of the UK's happiest towns. The list was made using data on green spaces, healthcare providers, air quality, broadband speed, cultural spots, public transport, and more.
The town has over 60 pubs, restaurants, and cafes, two shopping centres, a weekly market, and Polish, Korean, and African supermarkets.
Aylesbury is also home to the Roald Dahl Children's Gallery in the Discover Bucks Museum and the Waterside Theatre. There is one of the largest independent Arts Centres in the UK, the Queens Park Arts Centre.
"It's like a little village around here," graphic designer Mel Walker told the newspaper. "OK, it's not the sleepy little market town it was, but it's got so many positives going for it."
House prices in Aylesbury make it popular, as it is among the more affordable locations in the south-east. Flats can range from £80,00 to £380,000, while terrace houses average at £350,000 and detached homes start at £450,000.
The Guardian also highlighted the town's transport. London is accessible in just over an hour, making the town popular among commuters.
