The mild November weather is set to come to an abrupt end as temperatures are forecast to plummet to -10C, maps from forecaster WXCharts show. Freezing temperatures are set to descend on the UK in a matter of days, with weather maps showing figures below freezing for large parts of the nation. On November 18, Brits will be waking up to frosty conditions, as England, Scotland and Northern Ireland will see digits of 0C and below.
Scotland will bear the brunt of the freezing weather, as WXCharts maps turn a deep shade of blue. The entire country will dip below 0C in the early hours of November 18. In the Highlands, temperatures will average at around -6C, reaching down to -8C towards the west. Argyll and Bute will see the coldest temperatures, plummeting down to -10C. Towards eastern Scotland, figures will remain below freezing.
The freezing temperatures are predicted to be accompanied by snowfall, with the majority of Scotland turning purple on WXCharts maps. Up to 11cm of depth is expected at midday on November 17 in the southern Highlands.
The icy conditions will stretch down to northern England, with northwestern regions dropping down to -2C on the same day. Light snowfall is also predicted in the north, with up to 1cm of depth forecast for 12pm.
Newcastle will reach -1C, while regions between the north eastern city and Manchester will hover around 1C, with flurries of snowfall expected.
The rest of England will see single digit figures, averaging at around 5C in the south, maps from WXCharts show.
In Wales, figures will reach a maximum of 4C at this time, with light snowfall expected in the north. Temperatures in Northern Ireland will be slightly cooler, with 0-1C digits.
The snowy conditions are forecast to continue into Wednesday, November 19, as 11cm of snow is predicted to cover western Scotland. Patches of 2-5cm of snow will cover towns from Edinburgh down to Newcastle in Northern England, as temperatures remain below freezing. Freezing -10C temperatures will be hitting the Highlands at 6am on Wednesday.
The sudden freeze will continue for a third day, as on Thursday, November 20, digits will plummet down to -10C again at 6am, with the entirety of Scotland below 0C.
On this day, Wales and Northern Ireland will reach maximum temperatures of 1C, while England will hit a high of just 5C in the south, with northern England hovering between -1C and 1C for a third day.
Weather forecaster the Met Office predicts throughout the period of November 12 to 21, conditions will be "unsettled", with "bands or areas of rain moving across most parts of the UK"
"Some drier spells are also likely, the best of these probably towards the east and possibly the north," the forecaster said.
"Where skies are clear and winds light overnight, frost and fog are likely. From around the middle of the month, we may see a transition towards more generally drier weather across the UK, and with this it is likely to turn a little cooler overall, with a greater risk of overnight frost."
