Liverpool Football Club confirmed the heartbreaking demise of forward Diogo Jota in a car accident in Spain, describing the news as a “devastating” blow. The 28-year-old, along with his younger brother Andre Silva, died when their vehicle veered off a rural road in the province of Zamora late Wednesday night.
The club released a statement on Thursday via their official website, saying, “Liverpool Football Club are devastated by the tragic passing of Diogo Jota. The club have been informed the 28-year-old has passed away following a road traffic accident in Spain along with his brother, Andre. Liverpool FC will be making no further comment at this time and request the privacy of Diogo and Andre’s family, friends, teammates and club staff is respected as they try to come to terms with an unimaginable loss. We will continue to provide them with our full support.”

Local reports from Spanish authorities suggest the crash occurred around midnight, with initial findings indicating a punctured rear tyre caused the vehicle to lose control before catching fire. Firefighters were deployed to douse both the car and a nearby grassland blaze caused by the impact.
Jota, who joined Liverpool from Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2020, scored 65 goals in 182 appearances for the Reds. He played a vital role in Liverpool’s recent success, helping them lift the Premier League, FA Cup, and League Cup. Internationally, he earned over 35 caps for Portugal and was a two-time UEFA Nations League champion.
His brother, 25-year-old André Silva, was also a professional footballer, playing for Portuguese second-division side Penafiel.
Just weeks before the tragedy, Jota had married his longtime partner, Rute Cardoso. He is survived by three young children and a legacy as a beloved teammate and a forward whose contributions went far beyond the pitch.
