NEW DELHI: At least four police personnel, including a woman constable, were injured after being attacked by a group of locals in Bihar's Kishanganj district on Sunday, officials said. The incident took place when a police team visited the area to question a theft accused, reported news agency PTI.
Speaking to reporters, Kishanganj SDPO Gautam Kumar said, “seeing the police team, locals and family members of the accused gathered in large numbers and started assaulting the personnel with sticks and brooms injuring four policemen, including a woman constable.”
Following the attack, additional forces were deployed to bring the situation under control. The injured personnel were taken to the nearest government hospital for medical attention, Kumar said.
A case has been registered, and police have detained some locals for questioning.
“Police will soon arrest all those who attacked the police personnel,” the SDPO added.
The incident comes just two days after a similar attack in Jamui district, where four police personnel, including a woman constable were injured during a raid on individuals allegedly involved in the sale and production of illicit liquor.
The sale and consumption of alcohol has been banned in Bihar since April 2016, following a state-wide prohibition imposed by the Nitish Kumar-led government.
