NEW DELHI: Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge on Friday criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi , alleging that he couldn't speak against US President Donald Trump , who claimed to have ended the India-Pakistan war that followed the deadly 22 April terror attack in J&K's Pahalgam, where 26 civilians were killed by ISI-backed terrorists.
"How much does Modi ji and the BJP lie. When the India-Pakistan war was going on, Donald Trump said that he ended the India-Pakistan war, that he told them to stop...Trump said this 16 times. Modi did not respond to him. Why? Because he did not have the courage to speak against Trump," Kharge said at a rally in Odisha's Bhubaneshwar.
PM Modi, during his Canada visit for the G7 summit , however, had told Trump that India would never approve any form of mediation in its relations with Pakistan and there was no discussion at any level between India and the US about the proposed trade deal, or American intervention, during the events that unfolded after Operation Sindoor .
In the 35-minute conversation, the first since the India-Pakistan military clash last month, PM Modi sought to set straight Trump’s narrative that he forced a "ceasefire" by threatening both countries with trade disruption, while also offering to mediate between them on the Kashmir issue.
As he briefed Trump about Operation Sindoor against terrorist camps in Pakistan, PM Modi said India now views terrorism as an act of war, not proxy war, and that the operation is still not over.
Trump also invited PM Modi to "drop by" in Washington on his way back from Canada, but "Due to pre-scheduled commitments", the Prime Minister expressed his inability to meet the US President.
Later, addressing a rally in Bhubaneshwar, PM Modi said he declined a dinner invitation from US President Donald Trump in order to attend a public programme in Odisha and to visit the "land of Mahaprabhu".
“Just two days ago, I was in Canada for the G7 summit and the US President Trump called me,” PM Modi said.
"He said, since you have come to Canada, go via Washington, we will have dinner together and talk. He extended the invitation with great insistence. I told the US President, thank you for the invitation. It is very important for me to go to the land of Mahaprabhu and hence I politely declined his invitation. Your love and devotion to Mahaprabhu brought me to this land,” PM Modi added.
