NEW DELHI: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday took a sharp dig at external affairs minister S Jaishankar for apprising Chinese President Xi Jinping on bilateral ties, calling it a "full-blown circus" that, in his view, is "destroying India's foreign policy ".
"I guess the Chinese foreign minister will come and apprise Modi about recent developments in China-India ties. The EAM is now running a full blown circus aimed at destroying India's foreign policy," the Lok Sabha leader of the opposition posted on X.
The Congress leader's criticism came shortly after Jaishankar posted about his meeting with the Chinese President in Beijing. The minister was in China to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Foreign Ministers’ Meeting.
Jaishankar, in his post on X, shared that he met President Xi along with fellow SCO foreign ministers and said: "Called on President Xi Jinping this morning in Beijing along with my fellow SCO Foreign Ministers. Conveyed the greetings of President Droupadi Murmu & Prime Minister @narendramodi. Apprised President Xi of the recent development of our bilateral ties. Value the guidance of our leaders in that regard."
The external affairs minister had a packed diplomatic schedule in Beijing. On Monday, he met his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi and discussed the broader roadmap for bilateral relations.
Stressing the importance of mutual respect and long-term thinking, Jaishankar said: "Held detailed talks with Politburo Member and FM Wang Yi in Beijing this evening. Spoke about the need for a far-seeing approach to bilateral ties and building a stable & constructive relationship."
Highlighting India’s priorities, he added: "Incumbent on us to address aspects related to the border, normalising people-to-people exchanges and avoiding restrictive trade measures & roadblocks. Confident that on the foundation of mutual respect, mutual interest and mutual sensitivity, ties can develop along a positive trajectory."
Jaishankar also met Chinese Vice President Han Zheng and noted a visible improvement in bilateral ties. He expressed optimism that talks during his visit would continue moving the relationship forward.
Jaishankar reaffirmed India’s support for China’s SCO presidency and noted New Delhi's commitment to meaningful outcomes from the grouping. Jaishankar is scheduled to attend the SCO Foreign Ministers’ meeting in Tianjin.
